HOORAY FOR CHELSEA MICHIGAN HIGH SCHOOL!

Blog44A

I was recently so impressed by the important precedent set by Michigan's Chelsea High School. This year, they have chosen to replace the annual homecoming queen title with an excellence award instead. This change resulted from the high school’s 2016 #WhyYouMatter campaign. The new award will be open to all students regardless of gender. Drew Vanderspool, president of the Student Council, wrote in a letter, “Responses to the change have mostly been positive, though some students who were hoping to be named homecoming queen are disappointed.”

THE CARTERS: A STRONG AND GROUNDED RELATIONSHIP

Blog 40A

The epitome of a successful relationship is that of a harmonious, long-term marriage, which suggests that the masculine and feminine energies are balanced within each person and as a couple. Such is the case of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, who have been married for over seventy years. As mentioned in an earlier blog, one doesn’t have to enroll in a class or travel to a far-off land to learn about shamanism. It is not so much a matter of technique but viewing and living life from the place of shared sisterhood and brotherhood.

THE POWER OF JOURNEYING

Blog16A

Our psychological and spiritual roots go back to cultures steeped in shamanic tradition. Shamanism embraces and draws on the universal spiritual wisdom inherent in all indigenous tribes. The practice of shamanic “journeying” involves entering an altered state of consciousness to tap inner resources and apply healing energy. It is a method by which we, as human beings, are able to strengthen this natural connection to wisdom and bestow healing on ourselves and our communities. The goal is to generate internal and external harmony with all of creation. Carl Jung dipped into shamanic territory when he described how nature provides countless mothering archetypes that nourish and soothe us—including animals, real or imagined.
