THE ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD RELUCTANT HERO

Blog45A

To say Will Restall is a reluctant hero is an understatement. However, that is the tag people are hanging on this Tolland Middle School student after his actions helped his injured bus driver receive quick medical treatment. Will almost missed the school bus that morning, and as he sat on the bus he focused intently on his cell phone, playing a video game. He waited the usual ten minutes to be allowed off the bus to go into the school. But then he heard a loud noise and looked up to see that the bus driver was no longer in the driver’s seat. She was slumped into the stairwell of the entrance of the bus, apparently having passed out. Will left his aisle seat, grabbed the two-way radio, and reported several times the driver was hurt. Later in the day, it was reported the driver was at home, resting and recovering, and was going to be okay. HOORAY FOR CHELSEA MICHIGAN HIGH SCHOOL!

Blog44A

The new award will be open to all students regardless of gender. Drew Vanderspool, president of the Student Council, wrote in a letter, “Responses to the change have mostly been positive, though some students who were hoping to be named homecoming queen are disappointed.”

Awakening to Eckhart Tolle's Teachings

For a number of years I have been familiar with Eckhart Tolle, listening online to his presentations and reading his book The Power of Now. Tolle is a German-born resident and described his childhood as unhappy—his parents fought and eventually separated. In addition he felt alienated from a hostile school environment. When he was thirteen he moved to Spain and lived with his father, who did not insist he attend high school. Instead, Tolle studied literature, astronomy, and various languages at home. When he was fifteen he read several books by Joseph Anton Schneiderranken—a German mystic—and responded very deeply to those books. Tolle was depressed for much of his life, until he was twenty-nine and experienced an “inner transformation”; for several years he wandered in a state of deep bliss.

Although a previous blog presented the trials and tribulations of the homeless, today’s blog features an unusual tale of a man who “righted his wrongs” and the beneficial impact this had on numerous homeless people, as well as on youth at risk.
