People are picking up new hobbies while in self-quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A USA Today article reports that gardening is experiencing a boom among Americans. Not only is it a way to pass the time, it also ensures there will be fresh food after panic-buying led to shortages in grocery stores. Americans are also purchasing animals, particularly chickens, to produce a steady influx of eggs.

As a new normal begins to settle across the world amid the coronavirus pandemic, many in-person activities are converting to online spaces. For some this may be challenging, yet the difficulties of using technology are not stopping Anna Marie Leo from teaching her dance classes on Zoom. Born in 1930, Leo began dancing when she was four years old after she tagged along to her sister’s classes in Wilmington, Delaware. Her sister gave up dancing, yet Leo discovered her lifelong passion in those classes. When she was twenty-one, Leo teamed up with her husband to open a dance studio in Wilmington: Anna Marie Dance Studio.

VITAL MEALS HELP HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS AMID CORONA VIRUS CRISIS

According to a recent New York Associated Press article, the Nachas Health and Family Network in Brooklyn has been forced to suspend its counseling services, exercise classes, and Torah lessons due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Now they rely on the kindness of Israel Frischman, who volunteers to continue delivering kosher meals to Holocaust survivors, many of whom live in poverty, are in their eighties and nineties, and are at high risk for contagion. Frischman, a caterer, perseveres despite personal risk and lack of compensation.

World War II veteran Pete DuPre traveled to his mecca in February—West Point Military Academy. According to CBS News, this ninety-six-year-old was invited to the Army vs. Navy basketball game between West Point and the Naval Academy. He wasn’t just a spectator, though, he was there to perform. Known as “Harmonica Pete,” he acquired his first harmonica as a boy during the Great Depression.
