According to Ted Andrews, author of Animal Speak: The Spiritual and Magical Powers of Creatures Great and Small, it is of great significance that the dolphin is a mammal that swims in the ocean. This has meaning because water is the symbol of creation, passion, and sexuality—the element of all life and new dimensions and forces. The dolphin has a rhythm to its breathing, and learning to breathe similar to a dolphin can be very helpful. Symbolically, dolphins can lead you to underground caverns and the primordial beginnings of yourself. In addition, the dolphin has sonar ability—it uses a series of clicks and responses—sound being the creative life force. Dolphins can show you how to enter the waters of life, and then with breath and sound call forth from those waters what you most need and desire.

On several occasions, I was fortunate to swim with dolphins off the coast of Florida. These were magical experiences. As I heard their sounds, I experienced them swimming close to me, as if inviting me to pay more attention. I was aware of their ability to initiate and inspire deep changes in my life that I would ultimately generate.

Of note is the organization Dolphinity Heart World, founded in 1996 by Linda Shay, author of Dolphin Love from Sea to Land. She describes how the quality of her relationships determines the quality of her life, and she refers to dolphins as masters of connection. In the book, she speaks of the telepathic encounter she had with a pod of wild Hawaiian spinner dolphins. She asked them, “What are you here to teach us?” “UNITY-COMMUNITY,” was their immediate reply.

From my perspective, this is a message that applies to each of us as the planet struggles with challenges and obstacles never known before. Unity-community signals us to join hands and work on every level to create JOY on this planet! However, there are many ways to do this. Dear readers, it would be much appreciated if you would offer your perspective as to how this can be achieved. Can you think of ways to work this on a personal level (in your own being, in your home, in your community) and/or on a more global level? All comments and suggestions are welcome!

WHAT THE ELEPHANTS CAN TEACH US

The elephant is the largest living land mammal and is known as a symbol of ancient power, strength, and royalty. There are two types still in existence—the Indian and the African. In a National Geographic essay entitled "Human Females Could (Should?) Be More Like Elephant Females," the author Katarzyna Nowak explains how female elephants gain invaluable knowledge from experienced, older matriarchs. They are socially complex and intelligent creatures who inherit from their mothers all the knowledge of migration routes and feeding sites that a herd needs to survive. Nowak also asks what unique skills human females hold for the future of our species and ecosystems.

One exceptional feature of human females is they live long after menopause. Thus, like elephants, women pass on knowledge and help care for the next generation. Humans, too, are habituated to female social bonding, teaching, and communal rearing.
