According to a CNN article, sixth-grader Ruben Martinez plans to display posters, pass out flyers, and promote a challenge on Facebook to help his Texas community begin to heal from the devastating shooting that claimed the lives of twenty-two people and injured twenty-four others. This eleven-year-old is encouraging each person in El Paso to do twenty-two good deeds for others—one for each of the victims who were shot and killed when a white supremacist fired shots inside a Walmart on August 3, 2019.

According to the Hechinger Report, an online journal covering education and inequality matters, when Bradley Arrowood was in jail and given a textbook, he laughed because education was the last thing on his mind. When he was a child, Arrowood was told he’d never amount to anything. He grew up in California, dropped out of school when he was sixteen, and supported himself with illegal activities until he was twenty-three years old. At that time, he killed a man he suspected of sleeping with his wife. Arrowood was sentenced to life in prison without parole in 1995, and he admitted that he “deserved every bit of my sentence.”

On the 150th anniversary of a music festival that originally inspired resistance to Soviet control and later received recognition from the United Nation’s cultural agency, tens of thousands of Estonians joined in singing folk songs on Sunday, July 7th, 2019. This celebration attracted 35,000 singers, more than 1,000 choirs, and 700 dance groups to the capital of Tallinn. This event, held every five years, began as only a song in 1869.

Research published last year in The Lancet concluded that no amount of alcohol consumption is healthy. One concern, often overlooked, is the high caloric and sugar intake that comes with many alcoholic beverages. For example, craft beers often have more alcohol than traditional macro-beers. And more alcohol means more calories. Tequila, vodka, rum, and gin have zero grams of carbohydrates, so they don’t raise blood sugar, as long as you drink them straight up. If you have diabetes, you should count one drink as two fat exchanges.
